Live taping and listening-room concert marking the album release of modern jazz recording Legacy by Austin native Elias Haslanger.
Elias Haslanger brings his new album Legacy to Monks Jazz Club on Saturday, July 25, with two shows at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM. It's a live-taping, listening-room concert, so the room is meant for listening rather than socializing—BYOB, whisper-policy enforced, all ages. The show is sold out.
Legacy is Haslanger's ninth recording as a leader and the first of two new albums he's putting out this year. The title points to what's inside: an all-original modern jazz program dedicated to the mentors who shaped him over the decades. That list runs from trumpet icon Maynard Ferguson in New York to COM co-founder Dr. James Polk here in Austin. He toured with Ferguson in Brooklyn and was mentored by Ellis Marsalis, who played on Haslanger's award-winning release Kicks are for Kids.
His band Church on Monday, which he founded with Polk, has picked up five Austin Music Awards, and their LIVE At The Gallery was recognized by Downbeat. More recently, he collaborated with trumpeter Mike Sailors on the 2024 release Elias Haslanger Meets Mike Sailors. Legacy adds to that body of work, and this particular night puts the new material in front of a live audience while the tapes are rolling.
