DODO play Monks Jazz Club on Tuesday, August 4, in a live taping in the club's listening room. The band is a prog-fusion unit formed in late 2021 and led by Austin's own Rhodes enthusiast Sam Blomgren. They draw on the electric, adventurous spirit of 1970s Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea, and they describe their approach as pushing the envelope through improvisation and self-expression while writing compositions meant to be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. That's a fair amount of ground to cover in one set—the open-endedness of the improv balanced against the structure of the writing—and the recording aspect adds another layer to the night.

Monks itself started as a pop-up listening room and has since grown into a state-of-the-art audio and video recording studio and event space in the heart of East Austin. It hosts a curated concert series featuring some of the best improvisational jazz groups and musicians the region has to offer, and this show fits right into that. Because it's a live taping, you're not just watching a performance; you're in the room while they capture it.
