An intimate vinyl gathering hosted by DJ Shani, featuring themed playlists inspired by Moki Cherry and Don Cherry, encouraging listeners to hear records through.
The Contemporary Austin is hosting another Deep Listening Session on Wednesday, September 30, at the Jones Center downtown. This one is led by DJ Shani, who hosts The Groove Temple on KUTX, and it runs from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
The session takes place inside The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry, an exhibition dedicated to the artist Moki Cherry. The whole thing is built around vinylβa themed playlist inspired by her and by the music of her longtime partner and collaborator, the jazz musician Don Cherry. Shani will introduce the room to their world and to the Organic Music philosophies they both lived and worked by. The format is meant for settling in and hearing a record through, rather than sampling tracks, so it's more of a listening experience than a typical DJ set.
Deep Listening Sessions are a recurring part of the exhibition, each about an hour long and led by a different guest musician, DJ, or music historian. They're intimate gatherings, and since they happen inside the gallery, you're hearing the music in the same space as the work. If you've been following the exhibition, this is one of the ways the museum is bringing it to life.
