Intimate gatherings with themed vinyl playlists inspired by Moki Cherry and Don Cherry, hosted by a guest musician, DJ, or music historian.
The Contemporary Austin - Jones Center is hosting another Deep Listening Session on Wednesday, October 28, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. This one is hosted by Jesse Ebaug, who'll be at the turntables for the evening.
If you haven't come across these before, they're intimate gatherings built around themed vinyl playlists inspired by Moki Cherry and the music of her longtime partner and artistic collaborator, the jazz musician Don Cherry. The sessions are held inside the exhibition The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry at the Jones Center, where they run as a monthly fixture. Each one starts with an introduction to Moki Cherry and to the Organic Music philosophies that both she and Don Cherry embodied in their shared lives and artistic collaborations. From there, the guest host takes over with a curated set of records that play into those themes.
Ebaug is the guest host for this session, and like the others, he'll be working from vinyl. The whole thing is tied back to that same Organic Music thread that runs through the exhibition, so the music you'll hear is meant to sit alongside the art on the walls. It's a low-key way to spend a Wednesday eveningโpart listening party, part introduction to two artists who spent their lives working together.
