A Bharatanatyam dance theatre production by the Sparsha Dance Ensemble, exploring rhythm, energy and transformation through the concept of duality.
Sparsha Dance Ensemble brings Damaru – Duality: A Dance Theatre Production to the Dell Fine Arts Center on Saturday, September 19, at 5 PM. It's a Bharatanatyam production conceived and choreographed by Vidhya Subramanian, and it marks the company's first ensemble work.
The title comes from the damaru, the small hourglass-shaped drum that serves as the production's starting point. Its form suggests the flow between Purusha and Prakriti, stillness and motion, creation and dissolution. From there, the piece explores duality, energy, and transformation, working from the idea that rhythm is the force animating creation—the thing that shapes movement, sound, and the balance between opposites. Eight dancers make up the ensemble, and the performance is set to an original score produced at Resound India in Chennai.
If you're a dancer yourself, there's a Bharatanatyam masterclass for intermediate and advanced levels that precedes the show. Registration for the class includes two complimentary Zone A tickets to the performance, so you can spend the afternoon working on the form and the evening watching it on stage.
