A double bill screening of the horror classic Carrie (1976) and the cult favourite Jennifer's Body, presented by the Coming-of-Rage film series.
Paramount and Stateside Theatres are hosting a double bill on Saturday, October 3, called Coming-of-Rage, pairing two horror films that both center on high school girls pushed to the breaking point. The first half is Carrie (1976), and the second is Jennifer's Body (2009).
Carrie is being shown as a 50th Anniversary edition, which is a nice way to mark the half-century since Brian De Palma first brought Stephen King's story to the screen. It's 98 minutes long and built around Sissy Spacek's fearless lead performance as a girl who unleashes the righteous fury of her telekinetic powers on an unkind community. Spacek is joined by Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, William Katt, John Travolta, Nancy Allen, PJ Soles, and Betty Buckley. It's a classic for a reason, and seeing it on the big screen is the way it was meant to be experienced.
Following that is Jennifer's Body, a 102-minute cult favorite from 2009. It was directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, and it stars Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. The story follows a small-town high school student possessed by a hungry demon, which makes the boys who never stood a chance with her take on a new luster. It's a sharp, darkly comic take on the teen horror movie that has only grown in reputation since it first came out.
