A family-friendly storytime session led by Colors of Austin Counseling clinicians, pairing children's books with creative activities to help children understand and express their emotions.
Colors of Austin Counseling is bringing another storytime to BookPeople on Wednesday, October 28, starting at 10:30 AM. This one is led by Alxis Turner, an LMSW who works as a local child, teen, and young adult therapist. It's part of a series of family-friendly gatherings that Colors of Austin Counseling runs throughout the year, alongside their usual therapy services.
The format is simple: each session pairs a children's book with a creative activity. The stories are all about understanding emotions and creating safe spaces to express them, and the activity lets kids work through those ideas in a hands-on way. Every child goes home with a journal to keep practicing "I feel ___ when ___" statements, so the conversation doesn't have to end when the session does.
Turner is a child, teen, and young adult therapist here in Austin, and she's joined by the rest of the Colors of Austin Counseling team, which includes clinicians and counseling interns. The whole group comes out to read and lead the activities, and the sessions are designed for families to do together. If you've been looking for a low-pressure way to talk about feelings with your kids, this is a good place to start.
