A children's storytime session led by Alxis Turner where children read about emotions and create their own 'emotion spot' to help identify feelings.
Colors of Austin Counseling is hosting a storytime for kids at BookPeople on Wednesday, August 5. It's one of the mental health events they run alongside their therapy practice, and this one is built around emotional literacy—helping children put words to what they're feeling.
Alxis Turner, a local therapist who works with children, teens, and young adults, leads the session. It opens with a reading of A Little SPOT of Feelings: Emotion Detective by Diane Alber, a book that treats emotions like little characters you can spot and name. After the story, the kids get to color and draw their own 'emotion spot' to help them identify what they're feeling in the moment. Everyone goes home with a small 'Can you spot my feelings' journal to keep practicing those 'I feel ___ when ___' statements at home.
It's the kind of thing that's easy to talk about in the abstract—we all know kids struggle to explain why they're upset or overwhelmed—but having a concrete tool like a journal makes it a bit more manageable for them. If you've got a little one who gets stuck when you ask how their day went, this is a good way to give them a starting point.
