Church on Monday with Elias Haslanger

Elias Haslanger and his band Church on Monday are back at The Continental Club Gallery on Monday, August 24, as part of their long-running residency. It's a Monday night tradition that's become one of the city's longest-running live music residencies, and this is one of several dates they're playing through the end of summer and into the fall.

Haslanger, a tenor saxophonist, put the group together in the fall of 2011 for his fifth recording as a leader. The band took its name from an original composition he wrote for that session, which became the title track of the album. That record spent 11 weeks on the national jazz charts, peaking at number 14, and picked up positive reviews in Downbeat and Jazz Times—the kind of momentum that helped Haslanger secure the residency at the Gallery in the first place. Since then, the group has released three critically acclaimed recordings and won five Austin Music Awards, including Best Jazz for 2012-2013. They've played ACL Live at The Moody Theater and Austin clubs like The Elephant Room and Parker Jazz Club, and they play as a tribute to the memory and legacy of the late Dr. James Polk.

On the stand with Haslanger are Tommy Howard on guitar, Daniel Dufour on drums, Sam Pankey on bass, and Terry Bowness on organ. It's a full quintet, and they've been playing together for years, which is part of why the residency has stuck around as long as it has.

This is one of several Monday nights they're scheduled for: August 17, August 24, August 31, September 7, September 14, September 21, and September 28, 2026. Each one runs from 8:30 to 10 PM at The Continental Club Gallery, with a $10 cover.
