Church on Monday is back at The Continental Club Gallery on Monday, July 20, with saxophonist Elias Haslanger leading the group. It's part of the residency that's become one of the longest-running live music runs in Austin, with fans lining up outside the club every Monday night.
Haslanger started the group in the fall of 2011, and the name comes from an original composition he wrote for his fifth recording as a leader. That record spent 11 weeks on the JazzWeek charts and picked up positive reviews in Downbeat and Jazz Times, and it was on the strength of that success that Haslanger secured the residency at the Gallery. More than a decade later, the Monday night slot is still going.
Since then, the group has picked up five Austin Music Awards and put out three critically acclaimed recordings. They dedicate their music to the memory of Dr. James Polk, a detail that's been a constant for the band over the years. If you've never caught them, this is a good place to start—a residency that's survived long enough to be a fixture of the city's jazz scene.
