Chris Duarte plays The Cactus Cafe on Friday, September 25, with Beth Lee joining him on stage. It's a pairing of two artists from different corners of the roots world: Duarte, a blues guitarist with a long track record, and Lee, whose sound pulls from Americana, fifties R&B, and nineties alternative. She's been playing her blend of roots, indie, and rock 'n' roll since 2008, and she describes it as sitting somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Liz Phair.
Duarte's name carries some weight in the blues world. His second album, Texas Sugar Strat Magik (1994), sold over 100,000 copies and earned him 'Best New Talent' in Guitar Player's Reader's Poll, where he also placed fourth in the 'Best Blues Guitarist' category, behind Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, and B.B. King. He was inducted into the Canada Blues Hall of Fame in 2016. His fifteenth album, Ain't Giving Up (September 2022, Mascot Records), was recorded live in the studio with producer-guitarist Dennis Herring, their first collaboration in 22 years.

The show is at The Cactus Cafe, 2308 Whitis Ave, in the Student Union of the University of Texas. The venue opened in 1979 and won the 2001 Readers Poll for Best Live Music Venue. Doors open at 7 PM, and the music starts at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $13.50, which is $10 plus $3.50 in fees.
