Open house workshop with Ana Beatriz of Altarxito, creating and installing mini altars for Día de los Muertos.
The Christi Center is opening its doors on Wednesday, September 30, for an open house workshop centered around Día de los Muertos. The night is built around Altarxito, an art project by Ana Beatriz Muñoz that reimagines the Day of the Dead. Muñoz will lead the workshop, where you'll make and install mini altars throughout the center.
For context, the Christi Center is a grief support organization in Central Texas. This is an open house, so you can tour the space, meet the board, and get a sense of their support programs and signature events. The workshop runs alongside that—you can hang out and see how the organization works while you're building your altar.
Muñoz describes Altarxito as a way to change how we talk about loss. "If grief has always had to be quiet for you, consider this your invitation to do it a la Mexicana, with colour, with stories, with lleno de vida. That is the heart of Altarxito," she says. The mini altars are a smaller, more personal take on the tradition, and the installation part means they'll be placed around the center rather than just sitting on a table. If you want to keep the practice going at home, altar kits are available to purchase, and there's a discount code that takes 30% off at altarxito.com.
