A series of performer workshops in acting, singing and dancing led by Teatro Vivo, open to students of all ages and culminating in the company's annual Pastorela.
Teatro Vivo is leading a series of performer workshops at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center from October 15 to 29, part of the center's Casa de la Cultura program. The workshops cover acting, singing, and dancing, and they're designed to build toward a specific goal: the chance to take part in Teatro Vivo's annual Pastorela.
If you've never come across them, Teatro Vivo is one of the city's longest-running theater companies, and this is a way to get in on their process rather than just watching from a seat. The instruction is beginner-friendly and open to students of all ages, so you don't need a background in performance to join. The focus is on techniques specific to Latinx theatre and storytelling, which is what gives the workshops their particular flavor.
The workshops are held at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB MACC), 600 River St., in downtown Austin. The center reopened to the public on June 6, 2026, after Phase 2 of its 2018 Facility Expansion Plan, so it's back in full swing. Beyond these workshops, the MACC is dedicated to the preservation, creation, presentation, and promotion of the cultural arts of Mexican Americans and Latino cultures. It also runs galleries, arts classes and camps, the Caminos teen leadership program, and the Latino/a/e Artist Access Program, which gives local artists space to show their work.
