Screening of the film By Hook or By Crook in a new 4K restoration, presented as part of the 'Queer Cinema: Lost & Found' series at AFS Cinema.
AFS Cinema is screening By Hook or By Crook on Wednesday, August 5, at 6 PM. The film is part of the Queer Cinema: Lost & Found series, and this particular showing is a new 4K restoration, so it's a chance to see it in better shape than it's been in for a while.
By Hook or By Crook came out in 2001 and was directed by Silas Howard and Harry Dodge. It's a queer and trans buddy film that follows Shy, a gender-bending dreamer whose plans for a life of crime collide with Valentine, an adoptee searching for her birth mother. The two end up forming an unlikely bond as misfits on the margins. Critics have called it ahead of its time, a film that delights in exploiting the loopholes of polite society and a gritty transmission from the margins that operates beyond definitions of genre or gender. It runs 95 minutes.
As part of the Queer Cinema: Lost & Found series, the screening fits into the broader work of the Austin Film Society. AFS was founded in 1985 by Richard Linklater with the goal of empowering the community to make, watch, and love film and creative media, and its cinema serves as a hub for Austin's creative community. This series is one of the ways they keep that mission going, bringing back queer films that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks.
