Brownout is a nine-piece Austin outfit formed sixteen years ago by members of the Grammy Award-winning Latin revival orchestra Grupo Fantasma. Three Austin Music Awards later, the band has grown into a force that draws on the classic influences of WAR, Cymande and Funkadelic. They've played festivals including Bonnaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, Pickathon, FFFFest, Bear Creek Music Festival, Utopia Festival and Pachanga Fest, and have served as a backing band for Prince, Daniel Johnston, GZA and Bernie Worrell.
In 2014 they scored a surprise national hit with Brownout Present Brown Sabbath, followed by Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath Vol. II in 2016 on Ubiquity Records. Their earlier albums include Homenaje (2008), Aguilas & Cobras (2009) and Oozy (2012). In 2018 they teamed up with hip-hop label Fat Beats for Fear of A Brown Planet, a collection of psychedelic funk interpretations of Public Enemy classics.
