AFS Cinema is bringing back Boyhood on Saturday, July 18, for a special screening that doubles as a reunion. The film will be followed by a live Q&A with director Richard Linklater and the principal cast, so you'll get the movie and the people who made it in one go.
If you're not familiar with the story behind the movie, it's as much a part of the experience as the plot. Linklater wrote and directed Boyhood over the course of 12 years, filming between 2002 and 2013. He cast the same actors and returned to them year after year, letting them age in real time on screen. The movie follows Mason Evans Jr. from childhood into adulthood, and the actors you see growing up alongside him—Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Lorelei Linklater—were actually growing up during the shoot. When it finally came out in 2014, it became a cultural phenomenon and a defining success for independent cinema, earning widespread critical acclaim for that exact approach to capturing the maturation of its cast.
Having the principal cast back together for a Q&A puts that 12-year process in a new light. The film is about time passing, and seeing the people who lived through it together on stage is a fitting way to revisit it. Linklater is also the Artistic Director of AFS, so this is home turf for him.

The screening starts at 5 PM on Saturday, July 18, at AFS Cinema, 6406 N I-35 Suite 3100. Tickets are $150 for AFS members and $175 for non-members.
