BookPeople presents author Stan Biderman in conversation with Isabella Skrypczak to celebrate the release of his new book, The Secularist's Bible.
Stan Biderman is coming back to BookPeople on Saturday, September 26, to talk about his new book, The Secularist's Bible. He'll be in conversation with moderator Isabella Skrypczak, and the whole thing is free and open to the public.
If you're not familiar with Biderman, he's a bit of an Austin legend. He's a UT Law graduate who made his name as the city's counterculture business lawyer, representing head shops, a gay bar, carneys, and the early days of Whole Foods. He later served as CEO of BookPeople, the state's largest independent bookstore, and has been a leader in the revitalization of South Congress since the late 80s. He's also the author of Everything Changes: A Spiritual Journey and Bullet Trains to Yaks, which he co-authored with his wife, Kathryn Minette.
The Secularist's Bible takes on America's church-state crisis through Biderman's particular brand of absurdist wisdom. He's the son of Holocaust survivors who grew up speaking Yiddish with a Texas accent, and that background colors the whole thing. The book is built around the combative exchanges between 'Saba'—the author as grandfather-philosopher—and Pfoot, his gleefully contrarian critic. It pairs constitutional arguments with subversive humor, and Publisher's Weekly called it "irreverent, provocative, and surprisingly moving."
