Blue Moon Jazz w/Rosie Flores

Rosie Flores is playing the Continental Club Gallery on Tuesday, August 25, with her latest combo, the Blue Moon Jazz Quartet. It's a departure from the rock 'n' roll she's known for, and the set is built around the Great American Songbook—classic jazz standards performed by the quartet with Flores on vocals.

Flores says she started singing standards and covers of the greats while living in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, and it was only when she teamed up with a jazz quartet that she got to sing her favorite classic standards again. The arrangements are unique, and the group performs the songs together rather than as a singer backed by a band. It's a different side of her than the one most people associate with her name.

The show is at the Continental Club Gallery, which opened in 2008 and holds about 40 people upstairs over the club's mothership on South Congress. It hosts rotating regulars across jazz, singer-songwriters, and jam bands, and runs Tertulia quarterly in the Iberian tradition of mixing poetry, song, and performance. It's also known for the chance that a rock or movie star might show up and sit quietly at the bar.

Rosie Flores and the Blue Moon Jazz Quartet take the stage at 8:30 PM. There's a $10 cover at the door.
