An afternoon crafting session where participants paint birdhouses and make hanging bird feeders to help migrating birds affected by light pollution.
Bird Crafternoon is happening at the Austin Public Library Windsor Park Branch on Tuesday, October 6, from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM. It's a free afternoon of crafting, and the whole session is built around light pollution and how it affects migrating birds. Most of these birds fly at night, guided by the moon, the sun, and the stars, but artificial night lights can throw them off course. The crafting is meant to help them: you'll spend the session painting birdhouses and making hanging bird feeders.
The venue itself has some history to it. The Windsor Park Branch opened on July 15, 2000, though library services in the area go back to the late 1950s, when bookmobiles delivered to the Windsor Village Shopping Center on Berkman Drive. That was followed in 1963 by the Windsor Village Station, and a 1992 bond issue later funded six new branches. At the entrance, you'll find Paul Bond's bronze sculpture Reading Between the Lions, part of the Austin Art in Public Places program.
