Bill Frisell plays the State Theatre on Sunday, September 20, as part of Laboratorio, the annual four-part concert series curated by singer-songwriter and violinist Carrie Rodriguez. Frisell shares the stage with Rodriguez and the Laboratorio house band, and the performance is titled Bolero Inmortal.
The title comes from the 1958 Mexican musical drama Bolero Inmortal, whose star, Eva Garza, was Rodriguez's great-aunt. The series itself is built around that kind of personal connection: Rodriguez leads and curates the four shows, which she describes as an immersive live experience celebrating Latine culture through musicianship, visual arts, and storytelling. For each show, the house band collaborates with a different guest artist, and this time that guest is Frisell.

That house band is a heavy-hitting Austin lineup: Brannen Temple, Roscoe Beck, Sergio Mendoza, Alex Marrero, and David Pulkingham. They've worked with other guests in the past, too—the indie rock band Calexico and the Latin Grammy-winning group Flor de Toloache have both played the series. The whole thing is hosted at the State Theatre, and the Bolero Inmortal performance runs from 7 PM to 9 PM.
