AFS Cinema screens the Coen Brothers' 1990 neo-noir Miller's Crossing as part of a week-long series dedicated to their first three films.
AFS Cinema is screening Miller's Crossing on Saturday, September 19, as part of a week dedicated to the Coen Brothers' first three films. The cinema is billing the series as a petite sampler of their range: a wackadoo comedy, a period gangster film, and a sweaty neo-noir filmed right here in Austin. Miller's Crossing is the period gangster piece, the brothers' 1990 neo-noir that pits the Irish and Italian mobs against each other in a midcentury turf war. The conflict gets complicated by Gabriel Byrne's ice-in-his-veins fixer, who resists the temptations of mob boss Albert Finney's fast-talking best girl, played by Marcia Gay Harden.
If you're planning around it, there are a few dates to keep in mind. Miller's Crossing plays September 19 and 20, and then again on September 24. The other two films in the series are part of the same week, so you can catch the whole set if you're in the mood for a Coen marathon. One of them was filmed in Austin, which is a nice local connection to have on the screen.
AFS Cinema is a two-screen theatre owned and operated by the Austin Film Society. They run a mix of new releases and revival screenings—documentaries, arthouse, classic restorations, and world cinema—and they have a full bar and upscale concessions on-site. It was a Best of Austin Readers Poll winner for Movie Theatre in 2026 and a Critics Pick for Best Movie Theatre in 2017.
