Exhibition of recent drawings by Bella Cheng at Dougherty Arts Center; admission is free.
Bella Cheng opens Regular & Precious at the Dougherty Arts Center on Saturday, October 10, with the show running through November 28. It's a collection of her recent drawings, and the title gives you a good sense of where she's coming from: the ordinary and the precious sitting right next to each other.
The work starts with the everyday—scenes from around the house and observations from nature—and then takes them apart. Cheng looks at these familiar things closely, abstracts them, cuts them up, and puts them back together again. Depending on the piece, the result can feel very small or completely out of reach. At one end, the drawings resemble the tiny architectures of life—the microbial, the cellular, the doll-like. At the other, they shift toward the cosmic, the alien, and the dreamlike. It's the same starting point stretched across two very different scales.
Cheng describes Regular & Precious as how she sees the world both inside and outside of herself, and she invites viewers to look with a kind of childlike curiosity. If you've ever spent too long staring at a leaf or a pattern on the wall until it started to look like something else entirely, that's the headspace this show lives in. It's about taking the things we usually walk right past and giving them enough attention that they change.
