The string quartet Invoke performs a programme blending classical, minimalist, bluegrass and folk originals, with the world premiere of Ignacio Rosado's 'Umbrascopes', as part of the Beerthoven series.
Invoke returns to the Beerthoven series at Saengerrunde Hall on Friday, September 4, their first Austin appearance in a season. The string quartet—Nick Montopoli, Zach Matteson, Karl Mitze, and Geoff Manyin—will be joined by Austin Symphony Orchestra violist Blake Turner, making five on stage for the night.
The program mixes classical, minimalist, bluegrass, and folk originals. SiriusXM Classical producer David Srebnik describes their sound as merging classical, folk, bluegrass, Americana, and minimalism, and NPR Music has noted the group's lightness and joy. The bill includes the world premiere of Ignacio Rosado's Umbrascopes, inspired by the total eclipse that crossed the heart of Texas in 1878, and Karl Mitze's quintet The Wrong Kind of Church.
Beerthoven has been bringing classical chamber music to informal Austin settings since 2014, pairing live music with free beer and snacks. The two intermissions offer pretzels from Easy Tiger and cold beer from Lazarus Brewing, with wine and non-alcoholic drinks at no extra cost. The venue, Saengerrunde Hall, is home to Austin's oldest cultural institution, the German singing society the Austin Saengerrunde, and to the city's largest Oktoberfest.
