Expo to learn about the Austin Police oversight process, new projects and programs, and how to participate in building trust and accountability.
Austin Police Oversight is hosting an expo at Austin City Hall on Saturday, September 26, from 10 AM to 2 PM. If you've ever wondered how police oversight actually works in this city, this is the day to get a look at it. The office—formerly known as the Office of Police Oversight—is separate and independent from the Austin Police Department, and its main job is to take community feedback about interactions with the department. The expo brings together community members, APO staff, City partners, and subject matter experts to walk through that process, answer questions, and talk about how you can get involved.
There's a fair amount of new material to see. They'll be showcasing the Officer-Involved Shooting Data Dashboard, the relaunched Know Your Rights initiative, and a new mediation program. It's a good chance to see what the office has been working on lately and to ask questions about how these things actually function in practice.
The day also serves as a forum. The office holds quarterly Police Oversight Implementation Working Group meetings, where the Complaints Division presents data on complaints, investigations, and recommendations in line with Resolution 99, which the City adopted in September 2023. There have been some changes to the system recently: as of March 2026, the Austin Police Department discontinued Class C and Class D complaint classifications and replaced them with a new Class I (Information) category. APO also conducts random audits of APD officer body-worn cameras, and in response to community feedback, they've added a Community Safety Listening Session to the Working Group agenda.
