A heartwarming play about friendship and resilience, Primary Trust is performed by the professional regional theatre Austin Playhouse.
Austin Playhouse is running Primary Trust from September 11 through October 4, as part of its 27th season. The play is by Eboni Booth, who won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for it, and it's become one of the most produced plays in the country. It's an intimate, heartwarming story about friendship, resilience, and human connection, focusing on the small moments that make life worthwhile.
The story centers on Kenneth, a man with a comfortable routine: a job he loves, his best friend Bert, and daily mai tais at Wally's. That all changes when he's laid off. Encouraged by Bert, he takes a job as a teller at Primary Trust Bank, where he has to face his past to embrace his future, and his friendship with Bert is put to the test. It's the kind of play that starts with a familiar, cozy life and then pulls the rug out, leaving the characters to figure out what's left.
Ben Wolfe directs this production, and the cast includes Robert Joseph as Kenneth, Vivian Noble as Corrina, Marc A. Pouhé as Bert, Huck Huckaby as Clay, and James Davery as Musician. It's a small cast, and the focus stays on the relationships between them.

Performances run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2 PM. Tickets start at $38, with Pick-Your-Price Thursdays at $26 and half-price student tickets; there are group discounts for parties of 10 or more.
