Austin Museum Day event at the AACHF celebrating the legacy of Bevis M. Griffin with an art installation, panel discussion and exhibition viewing.
Bevis M. Griffin is the focus of Austin Museum Day at the African American Cultural and Heritage Facility (AACHF) on Sunday, September 20. The afternoon runs from 2 PM to 4 PM at the AACHF, 912 East 11th Street, and it's open to all ages. Admission is free.
Griffin is known as the 'Black Rock Maverick of Texas,' a pioneering musician, multidisciplinary artist, entrepreneur, cultural historian, mental health advocate, and activist whose work spans more than five decades. An art installation chronicling his journey is on display in the AACHF's Dedrick-Hamilton House, and the afternoon is co-hosted with the Austin History Centre. The session kicks off with Griffin sharing his own timeline and journey, followed by a City of Austin Proclamation Presentation. After that, a panel discussion brings together Gavin Lance Garcia of EQ Austin, author Jason Crouch, music journalist Tim Stegall, SIMS Foundation CEO Derrick Lesnau, and Alex Vallejo of School of Rock. The program wraps up with a question-and-answer session and a viewing of the AHM curated exhibition.

Austin Museum Day itself has been coordinated since 1998 by the Austin Museum Partnership, a community-wide event that offers free admission and special programs at museums and cultural institutions across the city. This particular session is one of those, so you can drop in for the talk and the panel and then spend some time with the installation. It's free, it's all ages, and it runs from 2 PM to 4 PM on Sunday, September 20, at the AACHF on East 11th Street.
