Austin's annual Museum Day with live art demos, a history exhibit and an artisan store at the Old Bakery & Emporium.
Austin Museum Day comes to The Old Bakery & Emporium on Sunday, September 20, from 12 PM to 3 PM. It's part of the city's annual Museum Day, when museums across Austin open their doors free to the public. Admission is free, though an RSVP is recommended.
The Old Bakery & Emporium is a historic downtown building on the northwest corner of Congress Avenue and 10th Street. Inside, you'll find a shop with more than 50 handmade goods by local artists, a fine art gallery, and the Lundberg-Maerki Historical Collection, which tells Austin's immigrant history. Right next door is Old Bakery Park, a public plaza that opened in 2014.
On Museum Day, the venue adds a few things to its usual offerings. Live art process demonstrations run from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, so you can watch artists work in person. There's also live music on site throughout the afternoon. Between the demos, the music, the gallery, and the shop, there's plenty to do even if you only have an hour or two.

It's worth knowing what else this spot does. The venue hosts the annual Midsummer Festival, which honors its Swedish American heritage, and the Austin Veteran Arts Festival (AVAFest), founded by decorated Vietnam combat veteran and award-winning screenwriter Glenn Towery. On September 20, though, the focus is on the open house: free admission from 12 PM to 3 PM, live art demos from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, and live music on site.
