Austin Jazz Band plays The Elephant Room on Monday, August 31, starting at 7 PM. It's a big band night, which is a bit of a rarity in the city—most of the jazz you'll find around here is in smaller combos, so seeing a full horn section on one stage is something of a treat.
If you haven't run into them before, the band has been around for a while. It was started in 1993 by Bobby Davis and trumpeter Steve Fleckman, and the whole idea from the beginning was to bring professional and amateur players together to celebrate their love and respect for the art of jazz in a big way. That's a good way to put it, because that's exactly what a big band is: a lot of musicians on one stage, all locked in together. These days the band is under the direction of Brian Bettger, and it's grown into one of the top big bands in Texas.

It's a spot that hosts live jazz nightly, and there's no cover before 8 PM, so if you get there early, you can settle in without paying for the door.
