Austin Jazz Band plays the Elephant Room on Monday, July 27, starting at 7 PM. They're led by Brian Bettger, who now directs the ensemble.
The band has a long history in the city. It was founded in 1993 by Bobby Davis and trumpeter Steve Fleckman with a specific goal: to bring professional and amateur players together in a big-band format. That mix of seasoned pros and dedicated amateurs is still part of what they do, and over the years they've earned a reputation as one of the top big bands in Texas.
The venue is just as much a part of the night as the music. The Elephant Room has occupied its basement on Congress Avenue in the heart of old Downtown since 1991, and it's been filled with Chicago, Kansas City, and New York-style jazz ever since. It's a candlelit room with walls framed in famous autographs, and it stays open seven nights a week. If you want to get there early, happy-hour music kicks off at 6 PM, an hour before the main set.
