The Austin Civic Orchestra presents Flights of Fantasy, featuring a tuba soloist, film-score music including Barber's Night Flight and Toprak's Captain Marvel, and the Carnival of the Creatures narrated by Sara Hickman.
The Austin Civic Orchestra launches its 2026–27 season this Sunday, September 27, with Flights of Fantasy — a colorful, high‑energy program at the Austin Central Library’s Special Events Center. The concert begins at 4:00 PM and runs until 5:30 PM, offering an afternoon of vivid storytelling and cinematic sound as part of the ACO’s season, Journeys of Wonder and Beauty.
Audiences will hear concerto competition winner Ethyn Evans take center stage in Vaughan Williams’s expressive Tuba Concerto, followed by Barber’s atmospheric Night Flight, inspired by the world of early aviation. The program also features Pinar Toprak’s dynamic score to Captain Marvel, the first superhero film score written by a woman. The second half brings pure delight with Bruce Adolphe’s Carnival of the Creatures, narrated by Austin favorite Sara Hickman, a humorous and imaginative sequel to Carnival of the Animals.
The performance is led by interim Music Director Dr. W.P. “Gus” Sterneman III, who has been part of the ACO artistic team since 2014. Founded in 1977, the Austin Civic Orchestra brings together musicians from across the community to perform engaging programs in welcoming venues throughout the city.
