Artist talk where creators of 'Recovering the Lost Words', 'Little Memories' and 'The Classroom' discuss the concepts, materials and inspirations behind their work at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery.
The artists showing at the Dougherty Arts Center's Julia C. Butridge Gallery are coming together for an artist talk on Wednesday, August 12, from 7 to 9 PM. It's a virtual event, so you can tune in from home. The conversation brings together the creators behind three different projects currently on view: Recovering the Lost Words, Little Memories, and The Classroom.
Each group will walk through the concepts, materials, and inspirations that shaped their work. The Recovering the Lost Words collective explains how their pieces reconnect viewers to nature through interpretations of words that were removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary—a project that turns a loss of language into a way of looking back at the natural world. Zoee Xiao talks about Little Memories, which draws on shared childhood experiences to celebrate curiosity, wonder, and the beauty of everyday life. And Darla Barolini discusses The Classroom, where she uses painting and installation to explore education, community, and the evolving dynamics between students and educators.
Because the talk gathers artists from three separate projects, you get to hear how they each approached their subject matter—one group working from a list of disappearing words, Xiao from the common ground of childhood, and Barolini from the social space of the classroom. It's a good chance to hear them explain the 'why' and 'how' behind the work you'll see in the gallery.
