First solo show of Andrew Long in Austin since 1993, featuring abstract and organic representational paintings.
Andrew Long opens his first solo show in Austin since 1993 at Verdant Gallery, running from October 1 through November 22. The exhibition is titled Returning Home, The Quiet of Undoing, and it brings together abstract painting and organic representation.
Long has lived and worked in Austin for decades, so this is his first time showing solo in the city in over thirty years. The paintings come from a studio practice that's more about investigation and process than any specific result. He builds up the paint with a worn brush, a putty knife, or by pouring, and then works back into it with tools of erasure: a razor blade, a belt sander, or a Dremel. He chooses his colors by intuition, and the pieces often evolve over months or years in a cyclical, iterative process, so time tends to become irrelevant as they develop.
The title carries a few different meanings. "Returning Home" refers to his return to full-time studio practice and to showing in an Austin gallery. "The Quiet" is about the no-effort of attuning to his internal voice. "Of Undoing" is about directing focus by undoing where it's been—like putting the phone away to sit in the garden and read or draw. The results are colorful, playful, and resonant with deep emotion, wandering between abstraction, form, and color and organic representation.
