World premiere of a new one-act play by Zell Miller III, blending Peter Pan mythology with hip-hop theater.
Zell Miller III brings And She Was Loved to Hyde Park Theatre on September 3, the world premiere of a new one-act play. It's also the inaugural production of Black Rose Theater ATX, so it's a double debut for the company and the script. The show runs through September 12.
Miller is Austin's inaugural Poet Laureate, and he's both the playwright and one of the actors on stage. The play grew out of two personal losses in his life: the death of his mother, Vernell Miller, and the passing of his longtime mentor, theater icon Laurie Carlos. From there, it works through grief, emotional abuse, memory and healing. The staging leans on poetic storytelling, movement, music and ritual, borrowing from the mythology of Peter Pan and blending hip-hop theater, jazz aesthetics and a language of gesture.
Marley Miller takes the role of Peter Pan, with Siobhan Alexis in the ensemble. Renita Martin plays Laurie Carlos, and Dexxi Vaught plays Vernell Miller. The production is a one-act, so it's a single, focused piece of theater rather than a full evening of separate scenes.
