Concert by American Aquarium, a country rock band fronted by BJ Barham, at 3TEN Austin City Limits Live.
American Aquarium plays 3TEN Austin City Limits Live on Thursday, December 5, 2026. The band is led by frontman and founder BJ Barham, a Raleigh, North Carolina native who draws on his Southern roots and personal experience to write about a divided American South. He's been sober for six years, is a father, and remains married.
Barham's 2018 album Things Change earned him the "Southern Springsteen" moniker from Rolling Stone. His 2024 record, Lamentations, frames the political through the personal on tracks like "Me and Mine (Lamentations)," "Dogwood," "Bright Leaf," and "Better South."
On stage, Barham is backed by a full band: Shane Boeker on lead guitar, Alden Hedges on bass, Rhett Huffman on keys, Neil Jones on pedal steel, and Ryan Van Fleet on drums. The pedal steel and keys give the sound a distinct country-leaning lean, and with a six-piece on stage, there's a full band sound rather than a stripped-down singer-songwriter set.
