Live dancehall music performance by Alvin Crow and El Camino Band at the historic Broken Spoke venue.
Alvin Crow and El Camino Band play the Broken Spoke on Friday, July 24. Crow is an Austin local, and El Camino Band comes in from Belleville, Ontario, so the night brings together a Texas regular and a visiting act on the same stage.
If you've never been, the Broken Spoke is one of the city's oldest country institutions. It opened in 1964, when James M. White started it as a dancehall, and it's still running as one. They're known for homestyle meals—the chicken fried steak is the one people talk about—and they host live country music Tuesday through Saturday. On Wednesday through Saturday nights, from 8 to 9 PM, instructor Terri White leads two-step lessons on the floor, so you can get your footing before the dancehall music kicks in.

The night starts early. Dinner is served from 6 to 8 PM, and the dancehall music begins at 9 PM. There's no cover charge; the bands play for tips, so you can come in, eat, and stay for the music without paying at the door. The venue is at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas 78704.
