Saxophonist Alan Braufman performs music from his 1975 debut to his 2026 album Anthem for Peace in a live-taping listening room.
Alan Braufman plays Monks Jazz Club on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:30 PM. He's a New York saxophonist who spent decades as a cult figure of the city's loft scene, and this is a rare appearance by his quintet.
The set pulls from a long arc: music from his 1975 debut Valley of Search through to his 2026 album Anthem for Peace. That early record documented a lower-Manhattan jazz world far afield from the SoHo and Lower East Side hubbub, and its reissue forty-three years later revived his recording career. Gilles Peterson of the BBC has called him "a legend in free music."
His playing is described as hooky and inviting, with "Angels" recalling Albert Ayler and the post-bop "In Motion" echoing Jackie McLean. For this date, he's joined by a full quintet: Braufman on alto saxophone and flute, Chase Baird on tenor saxophone, Stefan Gonzalez on vibraphone, Mathew Frerck on bass, and Joshua Canate on drums.

One thing to keep in mind before you head over: Monks is a live-taping listening room, and the venue enforces a whisper policy during the taping. The show starts at 7:30 PM at 310 E. Saint Elmo.
