Children's book event and signing with author Adrianna Cuevas at BookPeople, celebrating the release of her middle-grade novel Mischief and Monsters.
Adrianna Cuevas is coming to BookPeople on Saturday, October 10, to talk about her new middle-grade novel, Mischief and Monsters. The event is free and open to the public, and it's being held on the second floor of the bookstore at 603 North Lamar Boulevard.
Cuevas is a middle school ESOL teacher living just outside Austin, and that background comes through in the book. Mischief and Monsters follows twelve-year-old Jordi, who discovers his mother, a wildlife biologist, has been secretly caring for cryptids—including the Chupacabra—at the Yaupon Creek Wildlife Refuge. When the greedy Harvest Sunrise Energy company tries to exploit the area, Jordi and his friends have to step in and stop them. It's a middle-grade story that mixes local folklore with a bit of environmental tension, and Cuevas will be there to talk through it.
The discussion is led by Laekan Zea Kemp, an Austin writer whose debut novel, Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet, was a 2022 Pura Belpré Honor recipient. The session runs about 45 to 60 minutes, and there's a signing line afterward. If you want a book signed, you'll need to buy a copy of Mischief and Monsters or something of equal value from BookPeople.

Seating is first-come, first-served and not guaranteed, so if you're set on a chair, it's a good idea to get there a bit early. There's no live stream or recording of the session, so you'll have to be there in person to catch it. The event is free, and the signing line follows the talk.
