Benefit concert supporting The Music Moves Mountains Foundation, with drummers paying tribute to Keith Moon.
A Tribute to Keith Moon comes to Central Machine Works on Sunday, November 1, as part of the Music Moves Mountains Foundation's annual benefit concert. It's a drummer-led night paying tribute to the late Who drummer, and the lineup is built around three guest drummers—Gregg Bissonette, Stephen Perkins, and Michael Jerome—backed by a large ensemble of Austin regulars: Kevin McKinney, Darin Murphy, Johnny Vogelsang, Larry Seaman, Jack Montesinos, Nico Leophonte, Cid Sanchez, Adam Johnson, and Patrice Pike. Keith Moon's daughter, Mandy Moon, will be attending as a special guest, and his grandson, Jack de Wolf, created the event poster artwork.
The show marks the 80th birthday of Keith Moon, the drummer with whom the Foundation shares a personal connection. The organization's founder has a son, Hudson, who is a drummer himself and became obsessed with Moon and The Who at age five. Hudson was diagnosed with a string of disorders and challenges, and The Who later backed the cause by donating the use of "Join Together" for the Foundation's campaign video. The Music Moves Mountains Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that uses music therapy, music education, and community outreach to make music more accessible to people in need.
The night is part of Central Machine Works' Fall Music Series, which the venue frames as going "beyond great music": each of the season's thirteen nights benefits one of eight local non-profits working to protect Austin's natural spaces, support its creative community, and preserve the city's character. A partner organization is on site for each event, and a portion of drink sales is donated to the cause. The day is all-ages and family friendly, with food, beer, and a full bar.
