One Ounce Opera presents the 8th Fresh Squeezed Ounce of Opera, a showcase of three commissioned micro-operas performed in an intimate setting with a complimentary bar.
One Ounce Opera is back at dadaLab with the 8th Fresh Squeezed Ounce of Opera, running July 17, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24, and 25. It's their annual micro-opera showcase, and this year they're putting on three brand-new, commissioned pieces in a single 70-minute program. Each one is sung in English and runs about 20 minutes, so you get three distinct stories in one sitting rather than one long opera.
The lineup consists of Having Guests for Dinner, with music by Nicholas Bentz and a libretto by Robert Ellsworth Feng; Mud Girl, with music by Omar Najmi and a libretto by Christine Evans; and Forever, with music by Elizabeth Gartman and a libretto by Melisa Tien. Julie Fiore is the stage director and Joseph Choi is the music director. The company reviewed over 100 submissions from around the world to pick these three, so they're not just pulling from a local pool.
If you're not familiar with what One Ounce Opera does, it's worth a little context. They've been staging short, dynamic works in intimate settings since 2012, and this showcase is their signature annual event. The whole thing is built around the idea of opera in unexpected spaces, and dadaLab fits that bill. The three pieces are all new commissions, meaning they're premiering here.
