Preliminary round of the Funniest Person In Austin competition where aspiring comedians perform original stand-up material for audience votes.
Cap City Comedy Club is kicking off the preliminary rounds of the Funniest Person in Austin competition this Sunday, August 2, at 4 PM. It's the start of a long road for about 250 aspiring comics, all fighting for the title and a $3,500 prize. The only rule is that they have to perform their own original material, so you're hearing what they've actually been working on rather than a polished set of old favorites.
Sunday's lineup features Lavelle Dontae, Lara Beitz, and Mojo Brookzz (Dyon 'Mojo' Brooks). The preliminary winners aren't decided by a panel of judges, but by audience vote, which puts the decision in the hands of whoever shows up that afternoon. If you're into seeing comics work through new material in front of a live room, this is exactly that.
Cap City is a contemporary Austin venue that bills itself as bringing stadium-sized talent to an intimate room on a weekly basis: for a modest ticket price, you watch a nationally accredited act from no more than 60 feet away. Shows run about an hour and forty minutes and typically pair an opener and a feature with a headliner. The room is non-smoking and serves everything from appetizers and craft beers to entrees, desserts and homespun cocktails in a cozy atmosphere. The balcony section of the main room is not wheelchair accessible.
