A live concert and recording session by the Monks Jazz Orchestra with special guest Nicholas Payton, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Austin venue.
Nicholas Payton leads the Monks Jazz Orchestra at Monks Jazz Club on Monday, September 21, for a night that's being recorded live. The show is presented by The Jazz Purveyor and marks ten years of Monks, a milestone the venue is celebrating all week.
Payton is a New Orleans trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer who's released more than twenty albums as a leader and earned a Grammy Award. He's also the originator of the #BAM (Black American Music) philosophy, which he's spent over a decade using to challenge the mislabeling and misrepresentation of Black creative music. His work moves through swing, funk, blues, R&B, and electronic music, and his practice remains tied to New Orleans' musical inheritance.
For this particular night, Michael Sailors is at the helm as music director, with support from The Live Music Society 501(c)3 and Haas Toyota. The evening is staged as a live taping and listening-room concert, so it's a bit more than a standard set—the recording means the room itself is part of the performance.

There are two sets: 7:30 to 9:00 PM and 9:30 to 11:00 PM. Tickets run from $37.83 to $42.95. Monks is now a full-service bar and enforces a whisper-policy, so it's a place to listen rather than talk over the music. The club is at 310 E. Saint Elmo in Austin.
