If you have never seen The Goonies on a big screen, here is your chance. Flix Brewhouse is bringing the 1985 cult classic back to the theater as part of Flix Picks, its monthly series that pulls favorite movies out of the vault years after they left theaters. It is a low-stakes, high-nostalgia night that works just as well for people who grew up on the movie as it does for anyone who has only ever caught it on a small screen at home.

The movie itself is a piece of 80s history. Directed by Richard Donner with a screenplay by Chris Columbus and a story by Steven Spielberg, it follows a group of kids on a treasure hunt and runs 114 minutes. The cast is a time capsule of young actors who went on to much bigger things: Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and Ke Huy Quan. It first hit theaters on June 7, 1985, and was filmed mostly in Astoria, Oregon, with the underground scenes built at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank and the final scene shot at Goat Rock State Beach in Sonoma County. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 2017, and a sequel has been in development since early 2025, so catching the original on the big screen is a nice way to get ready for whatever comes next.
What makes this a different kind of movie night is the venue. Flix Brewhouse bills itself as America's only first-run cinema brewery and Texas' Cinema Brewery, which is a polite way of saying you can order a full meal and a beer without leaving your seat. The theater is set up with luxury recliners and full-service dining delivered straight to you, so you are not stuck with just a bucket of popcorn. The menu leans into the cinema-and-brewery crossover: signature burgers, hand-tossed pizzas, and a shareable spread of crispy wings, loaded fries, soft pretzels and hot buttered popcorn, plus a sweet section with fresh cookies, donut holes and milkshakes and a set of vegan and vegetarian options. The beer is brewed on-site, with a lineup that includes 10 Day Scottish Ale, Nebulas Hazy IPA, Luna Rosa Raspberry Wheat and Lucha Libre Mexican Lager, alongside seasonal rotations, local guest taps, handcrafted cocktails and wine on tap.
If you are going with kids, it is worth knowing that the movie has a bit of a legacy beyond the screen. The soundtrack pulls from Cyndi Lauper, REO Speedwagon, The Bangles and Dave Grusin, and the music video for The Goonies 'R' Good Enough famously dropped the cast in with wrestlers like Andre The Giant, Rowdy Roddy Piper, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, The Fabulous Moolah and Captain Lou Albano. Anne Ramsey took home a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress as Mama Fratelli, and Sean Astin won the 7th Youth in Film Award for Best Performance by a Young Actor. It is a family-friendly night with a lot of history behind it, so whether you are introducing the kids to the Goonies for the first time or revisiting it yourself, it is a solid excuse to spend a couple of hours in a recliner with a beer in hand.
