If you're looking for a low-key Sunday plan that won't break the bank, the Austin Cookie Fest is hard to beat. It's happening today, Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Space 512, over at 7531 Burnet Road — about seven miles north of Zilker, which puts it well clear of any ACL traffic if you're coming from downtown. The best part? It's free to walk in, for adults and kids alike, with no ticket or wristband required.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Austin and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

Presented by The Cookie Museum, the fest is built around Austin's home and cottage bakers, who bring original cookies to show off and sell at their tables. The whole thing is set up as a friendly competition where you get a say: everyone walks in with a voter card, with a box to mark for each baker and a QR code to vote from your phone, and kids get their own card too. If you'd rather stick to paper, you can just hand your card in and it'll be entered for you. Voting also enters you into the giveaway, so it's worth doing either way.
There are two categories and four ribbons up for grabs: Best Signature Cookie, for each baker's own invention, and Best Chocolate Chip Cookie. Attendees crown the People's Choice, while a panel of professional bakers and special guests decide the Judges' Choice. The winners are announced at the closing ceremony, which is followed by free prize drawings. That ceremony also marks the official opening of The Cookie Museum itself, so it's a double reason to stick around until the end.
As for the cookies, bakers offer free samples of both their competition entries, and everything on the tables is for sale, so bring a way to pay if you want to take a box home. There's a milk and coffee bar on hand to wash it all down. A couple of practical tips are worth knowing before you go: first, come early. Bakers bring limited batches, and the popular tables run out, so getting there closer to 11 a.m. gives you the best chance to taste widely. Second, if allergies are a concern, every baker labels their cookies with ingredients and common allergens, but since these come from home and cottage kitchens, cross contact is possible — if an allergy is serious, it's worth asking the baker directly before you taste.
If you want to be in the running for the giveaway, you can RSVP at austincookiefest.com, which also lets the bakers know how many to bake. The prizes are worth the effort: a box with the signature cookie from every baker at the fest, a cookie decorating class for two, and more. Even if you skip the RSVP, you can still just show up and walk in free. With free parking out front and the whole thing geared toward families, it's an easy, low-pressure way to spend a few hours on a Sunday. Just remember to arrive early for the samples, taste your way around, cast your vote, and stay for the awards at the end.
