UpTempo teen night with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Spano, featuring the Coucheron duo performing Mendelssohn's Double Concerto.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra brings another UpTempo teen night to the Woodruff Arts Center on Thursday, April 22, 2027. It's part of their pre-concert series for middle and high school students in grades 6-12, where each session puts a spotlight on a composer, a performer, and an educator. The whole thing is led by a guest speaker and a teen musician, so it's more of a conversation than a formal recital.
This one centers on a double concerto written by a 14-year-old. The Mendelssohn siblings, Felix and Fanny, were both child prodigies who gave recitals in their family home, and the ASO is stepping in for them with the Coucheron duo: concertmaster David Coucheron and his sister Julie Coucheron on piano. The full evening pairs that with the world premiere of Adam Schoenberg's Concerto for Body and Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, all led by Music Director Laureate Robert Spano.
On the speaking side, Jeffrey Rowser, Director of Bands at Woodward Academy, hosts the night, and guest speaker Dr. Chantae D. Pittman, Director of Choral Activities at Campbell High School, joins in. Between the two of them and the Coucheron duo, there's a good mix of perspectives on the music coming from people who teach it and people who play it.
