Bluegrass band The Mountain Grass Unit plays the Variety Playhouse on Euclid Avenue in Atlanta.
The Mountain Grass Unit play the Variety Playhouse on Thursday, October 29, at 8 PM. They're a bluegrass band from Birmingham, Alabama, fronted by Drury Anderson, Luke Black, Sam Wilson, and Josiah Nelson.
Their debut album, Appalachian Smoke, was produced by Vance Powell and earned them IBMA Momentum Band of the Year. Since then, they've sold out numerous shows, and this is one of them. They describe their sound as sitting at the crossroads of jam band, rock, country, folk, bluegrass, and newgrass—which is a lot of ground to cover in one set. If you're not familiar with the terms, bluegrass is the traditional acoustic string band music of the Appalachian region, while newgrass is its more progressive, improvisational cousin. The jam band and rock influences pull it further toward the electric side of things, and the country and folk keep it rooted in song.

That mix is exactly what they're known for: the acoustic drive of bluegrass meeting the open-endedness of a jam band. It's the kind of music that works as well for listening as it does for dancing, and the Variety Playhouse is a good room for both. The show is at 1099 Euclid Ave NE in Atlanta, and it starts at 8 PM.
