Contemporary chamber music evening by The Merian Ensemble with two world premieres by female composers.
The Merian Ensemble is playing LOOP on Wednesday, October 28, with a program of contemporary chamber music written entirely by female composers. The evening is built around two world premieres: Rose by Christy Carew, which was commissioned by The Antinori Foundation, and Carried Away, a quintet by Kimberly Osberg. Both get their first public hearing here.
Those two new pieces are the center of the set, but they aren't the only things on the bill. The ensemble is filling out the program with works by Mary Kouyoumdjian, Soon Hee Newbold, Ruth Gipps, Jung Sun Kang, and Jocelyn Morlock. It's a wide-ranging group of composers, and the whole thing runs about 60 minutes.
If you haven't come across them before, The Merian Ensemble is an Atlanta-based chamber group. EarRelevant has described them as "one of Atlanta's beacons of change... with a blend of virtuosity and advocacy," and this particular program—centering on new work by women—fits right into that. The two premieres, Rose and Carried Away, are the night's main event, and the rest of the program provides the context around them.
