Live show by the West Coast jazz-funk band The Greyboy Allstars, led by Karl Denson, at Variety Playhouse.
The Greyboy Allstars play Variety Playhouse on Saturday, October 24, at 8 PM. They're a West Coast jazz-funk outfit that's been around for more than three decades, and this is their Atlanta stop.
The lineup is led by Karl Denson on sax and flute, Robert Walter on keyboards, Michael Andrews on guitar, Chris Stillwell on bass, and Aaron Redfield on drums. They first played together in 1994 at San Diego's Green Circle Bar, when DJ Greyboy put together a combo of local players to carry forward the funk of Grant Green, Idris Muhammad, and James Brown's J.B.'s. The group coined the term 'West Coast Boogaloo' for their landmark 1994 debut, recorded with funk icon Fred Wesley, which helped spark the West Coast's acid jazz and funk revival. The follow-up, A Town Called Earth, added cosmic jazz and cinematic textures to the mix.
There are some familiar names in the band. Frontman Karl Denson played on Lenny Kravitz's Let Love Rule and Mama Said, led Tiny Universe, and has toured with The Rolling Stones since 2014. Guitarist Michael Andrews, who also records as Elgin Park, is a film composer whose cover of "Mad World" is central to the cult status of Donnie Darko. Together they describe their sound as merging jazz, soul, and funk with hip-hop swagger and avant-garde improvisation.
