The Damned play their Final Damnation 50 tour at Variety Playhouse, with support from The Courettes and Gentleman Jesse.
The Damned bring their Final Damnation 50 tour to Variety Playhouse on Monday, October 26, with The Courettes and Gentleman Jesse opening. It's a long way from where they started, but the history is a good place to begin: they're credited as the first punk band to release a single, 'Neat Neat Neat' in 1976, a month before the Sex Pistols put out 'Anarchy in the U.K.' They were also the first to release an album and then a second, both by the autumn of 1977. After that, they kept the 'firsts' coming—the first punk band to tour America, the first to split up, and then the first to reform, returning with the 1979 album Machine Gun Etiquette.
That reform brought back the core members who are still around today. David Vanian, the baritone crooning vocalist, and Captain Sensible, on guitar and bass, remain the only original members in the lineup alongside founder Brian James. Their later work has drifted into different territory than the early punk days; Darkadelic is described as a late-period triumph that fuses garage, psyche, and punk with gothic and horror-movie aesthetics. It's a sound that fits the band's long-running interest in the darker side of things.

They've left a mark that reaches far beyond the punk scene, too. The Damned are cited as one of the most influential bands of all time, covered by Guns N' Roses, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, Green Day, and The Offspring. The support comes from The Courettes, a Brazilian-Danish garage rock duo formed in 2014 by Flavia Couri and Martin Couri, and Gentleman Jesse. The show starts at 7:30 PM at Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave NE.
