A classical music concert featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, with pianist Anna Geniushene performing Schumann's Piano Concerto and Nathalie Stutzmann conducting Bruckner's Symphony No. 5.
Anna Geniushene returns to the Atlanta Symphony Hall on Thursday, November 19, and Saturday, November 21, for a double-bill of Schumann and Bruckner. Both concerts start at 8 PM, and both feature the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann conducting.
The first half of the evening is Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto, a work known for the lively repartee between the piano and the orchestra. Geniushene is the ASO's Artist-in-Residence, so this is a homecoming of sorts. The Boston Musical Intelligencer once described her as "the kind of artist who takes risks for intensity, to transport us beyond this planet and deeper into the mystery of ourselves," and that's the kind of energy she brings to the stage here.
After the intermission, the focus shifts. Stutzmann leads the full orchestra through Franz Bruckner's Symphony No. 5, an epic that moves between hymn-like poignance and Herculean muscle. It's a big, sprawling piece that takes up a lot of room, and it's the kind of work that really lets a full symphony orchestra stretch its legs. Between the two, you get a full evening that starts with the intimate conversation of the concerto and ends with the sheer scale of the symphony.
