Solo show by Patrick Smith, a Georgia singer-songwriter who blends indie folk and sadcore on his debut album 'This Was All For Nothing'.
Patrick Smith is playing The Supermarket on Monday, October 19, starting at 7:30 PM. He's an Atlanta singer-songwriter, so this is a hometown show for him.
Smith didn't start out as a solo act. He picked up the guitar at 14 and spent years playing in several bands as a lead guitarist and frontman before stepping out on his own at 22. After a year of writing and recording, he released This Was All For Nothing, a seven-track album that deals with loss and dread. He puts drone-like ambience over indie folk, which gives the acoustic songs a darker edge than you'd usually find in the genre. He describes the sound as sitting at the intersection of sadcore and indie folk.
His influences are a bit of a mix. He points to the contemporary folk of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, but he also cites early 2000s doom metal—two things that don't usually sit in the same room, and that gap is exactly where the drone and the folk meet. It's that combination that pushes the record toward the darker side of acoustic music.
